Trajan's Column

»Trajan's Column — monument erected AD 106-113 by the Roman emperor Trajan. A marble column of the Roman Doric order, it measures 38m high together with the base. The spiral band over 240m long and about 1.2 m wide is covered with low-relief sculpture that forms a continuous narrative of the emperor's two campaigns in Dacia.« [read the Encyclopaedia Britannica article]

The Inscription on the Base of Trajan's Column is one of the most beautiful examples of classic Roman letterforms. It is believed that the letters were first written with a brush, then carved into the stone.

Rswedish ROMARRIKET hade sin största utbredning under Kejsar Trajanus tid (98-117e.Kr.). De latinska bokstäverna var färdigutvecklade och formfulländade. Inskriptionen vid Trajanuskolonnens bas är ett av de vackraste exemplen på huggen CapitalisPhoto by Bill Thayer - Copyright (C) Bill Thayer Qvadrata eller Capitalis Monumentalis som går att hitta. Inskriptionen vid Trajanuskolonnens bas är 2,77m x 1,14m. Bokstäverna på översta raden är c:a 11,5cm höga. Det anses att bokstäverna först skrevs direkt på marmorn med en bred pensel och därefter höggs texten in i stenen med mejsel och klubba.
