Lamy 2000 -- a 'writing-a-novel sort of pen'
Topic: Pens, Pencils
Neil Gaiman asks: "What are the characteristics of a 'writing-a-novel sort of pen' as opposed to a 'signing-your-name pen'?" He says: "The Lamy 2000 is a poor signing pen, it skips and scratches when you go fast, but it's fine if I've slowed up enough to write words rather than to do a signature." Gaskell's Compendium of Forms
Topic: Calligraphy
Gaskell's Compendium of Forms -- Social, Educational, Legal and Commercial. Penmanship, Correspondence, Etiquette, Poetry. -- "George A. Gaskell (1844-1885) was one of the most famous calligraphers in America. Gaskell's Complete Compendium of Elegant Writing (1873) was a bestseller, with over 250,000 copies sold in ten years. It inspired a whole generation of penmanship students, many of whom became prominent calligraphers later on (Louis Madarasz, for example). Gaskell was also the author of The Penman's Hand-Book (1883), another excellent calligraphy manual, and he was the editor of what was almost certainly the first monthly journal dedicated to calligraphy and penmanship. [Note: However, Gaskell was perhaps most famous as the author/compiler of a book called Gaskell's Compendium of Forms, Educational, Social, Legal and Commercial -- a massive tome on etiquette, etc., that no self-respecting Victorian gentleman or lady could do without reading.]"

School bans pencil cases
Topic: Pens, Pencils
Pupils as young as four have been banned from taking pencil cases to school - in case they are used to smuggle sharp weapons. The drastic action was taken after a boy was cut with a letter opener during "boisterous play". Paul Starkie, aged nine, suffered minor cuts to his chest and leg following the incident at St Anne's Primary School, Denton, earlier this week. Teachers discovered that the steel blade had been brought into school hidden in a pencil case. Now all 209 girls and boys at the Tameside school have been banned from taking pencil cases and their contents into the classroom to prevent any other "potentially harmful instruments" being brought into the school.
