TROLLI Gummi Candy Road Kill - Get It While It Lasts!
Topic: Design
"US food giant Kraft has decided to halt production of sweets shaped like roadkill - animals run over by cars. Animal rights activists criticised the product, fruit-flavoured Trolli® Roadkill Gummi candy, saying it encouraged acts of cruelty." Read the news at BBC or MSNBC 26.Feb.2005. (via Boing Boing and SF Gate)

"New, cool shape from Trolli® Gummi! Trolli® brings back the fun of Gummi Candy with an off beat twist on animal shapes. Trolli® Road Kill is three animals; a Snake, a Chicken and a Squirrel, each with a tire track down the middle of the piece! It's not an adult's gummi candy, that's why teens/tweens love it!

Trolli® is a favorite gummi candy among teens/tweens and has a heritage of providing them the cool shapes and concepts they love.

Each 5.0oz peg bag of Trolli® Road Kill contains approximately 50 creatures in an assortment of gummi fruit flavors."

Bitmap Fonts
Topic: Typography
I was searching for bitmap fonts for some new 80x15 link buttons. A few nice alternatives to Kottke's Silkscreen font are available free at, and Atomic Media has Susan Kare's bitmap fonts for sale. The new blog Fontleech is writing about free pixel fonts in 'Pixel Font Blowout Part 1'

Check out Susan Kare's site "My career in user interface graphic design began when I worked for Apple Computer between 1983 and 1986. My job: icon and font designer for a new computer, the Macintosh."

More about link buttons in this post 22.Dec.2004.

In Memory of Bill Yoshida, Archie Comics Letterer, 1922 - 2005
Topic: Comics
Bill Yoshida R.I.P. - "...Bill Yoshida, the longtime comic book letterer, passed away last week. He began lettering comics in the late sixties and became the main letterer for Archie Comics around 1980. Occasionally credited as 'Bill Yosh' or 'Saburo Yoshida,' his handiwork had a lot to do with the look and feel of that company's books ever since, appearing on almost every cover and something like 90% of the interior stories, plus the Archie newspaper strip..."

Parley's Magazine : Art of Pen Making (1834)
Topic: Quills
Art of Pen Making (reprinted from The Young Lady's Book; from Parley's Magazine, 13 September 1834, pp. 15-16)

"The complaint of having wretched pens, ink, and paper, as an excuse for careless or unintelligible writing, is a plea that ought never to be accepted from a young lady. She can rarely, if ever, be placed in situations where she cannot obtain paper and ink of proper quality. Quills are also easily obtained, and she ought to be able to make or mend a pen herself. If she have not already acquired the mode of performing this very useful operation, the following directions will, perhaps, be of considerable assistance. It is of course necessary that she should be furnished with a good pen-knife."

The Rorschach Inkblots
Topic: Art
The Rorschach test -- This site shows black and white outlines of the Rorschach inkblots. "Most people have heard of the Rorschach test (pronounced 'ror-shock'), but few have ever seen a real Rorschach inkblot. The blots are kept secret. When you see an inkblot in a popular article on the test (as in the Encyclopaedia Britannica entry on the Rorschach test), it's a fake: it's an inkblot, but not one of the inkblots. There are only ten Rorschach inkblots." (via marchdesign)

Hermann Rorschach (1884-1922) was a Swiss psychiatrist and the son of a painter. He took a deep interest in psychoanalysis, and during the 1910's he published several psychoanalytic articles. He experimented with the interpretation of ink blots, as did Leonardo da Vinci and Justinus Kerner. In 1921 he published Psychodiagnostik, these 10 inkblots and a guide to analysis of how people interpreted them. This work is now regarded a classic of psychiatry and also, art. See the inkblots in color at the Hermann Rorschach Artist Page

You can buy the "secret" inkblots at, or search for the Rorschach color plates on eBay auctions
